Children’s Dentistry

Dayspring Dental’s pediatric dentistry program builds a positive relationship between the dental team and the little patient. We want kids to feel engaged and empowered to care for their own oral health. Happy, healthy habits set the tone for a lifetime of good dental care where children feel comfortable and actually look forward to dental appointments.

Pediatric dental care accomplishes this from the very first appointment, through kid-friendly routine teeth cleanings and at every milestone your child reaches. We’re happy to support these little patients as they discover their new teeth, lose baby teeth, grow their adult teeth, and even when they require a filling (that isn’t so scary after all!) or opt for orthodontics as young adults.

Why Is Children’s Dental Care So Important?

As a parent, you may ask why children’s dental care is so important because the primary teeth fall out anyway! Most children have their baby teeth by the age of three. This first set of teeth begins to fall out by about the age of 6 and, except for wisdom teeth, most children have all their adult teeth by their early teens. Children gain and lose their primary teeth during their fundamental years and the state of their dental health has many long-reaching consequences.

Preventative Dental Care

At Dayspring Dental, we listen to our youngest patients. Asking questions about dental pain and sensitivity, we assess the complete health of their mouth to ensure there is no tooth decay, cavities, or gum disease. Providing a comfortable and relaxed experience, our team makes sure teeth are scaled and polished to create healthy smiles. When your children come in for routine cleaning and examinations, they are more likely to have good oral health for life.

Primary Teeth Are Important

Baby teeth may seem to be unimportant as they are temporary, with most coming in by age three and then falling out soon after to be replaced with ‘adult’ permanent teeth. Primary teeth help children learn to speak, eat properly, and hold space in their jaw for permanent teeth to come in. Our pediatric dentists understand how important these teeth are and make sure they are expertly taken care of. We can also show you how to care for your baby’s teeth and gums at home.

Fluoride and Sealant Treatments

Some additional treatments we may recommend at your child’s dental visit are fluoride and sealant treatments. A sealant is a thin film coating that is painted on your child’s teeth to protect the pits and grooves from bacteria which may cause tooth decay. Sealants are an inexpensive way to provide extra oral care for your child. Think of a sealant as a superhero repelling the ‘bad guy – bacteria’ from destroying your teeth.

Fluoride strengthens teeth by providing them with minerals to make them stronger. This rinse is often performed at the end of the dental visit. If you have questions about either of these treatments, please ask our friendly hygienists or dentists. We will help you make an informed decision.

Affordable Orthodontics in Oakville

At your child’s dental visit we may recommend orthodontics, including braces. Braces correct and align teeth, making oral care at home easier, and helping create healthy smiles for life. Crooked and crowded teeth are difficult to clean and care for, this often leads to tooth decay and gum disease.

If you would like to find out more about our orthodontics, let us know! We are here to assist. We can even create a comfortable payment plan to make them more affordable for your family. Visit our Orthodontics page for more information.

Your Child’s Dental Appointment

For patients of all ages, our ultimate goal is your health, your comfort and your satisfaction. In pediatric dentistry, special consideration is paid to the challenges that our youngest patients face when they sit in the dental chair. We’ll keep a close eye on children-specific oral health markers and milestones and we’ll talk to your child in a kid-friendly way that makes them feel safe and engaged.

Show and Tell

Some kids are adventurous explorers with a million questions, while others feel bashful, careful or even anxious about new experiences. We want everyone to feel safe, engaged, and positive about visiting the dentist. The best way to meet their emotional needs is to have a conversation in kid-friendly terms. We start each appointment by hearing their thoughts and concerns, then we explain what we plan to do during the appointment and answer any questions.

Gentle Examination

Paying special attention to children-specific oral health markers, we gently examine your child’s gums, tongue, teeth, and overall health. We keep an eye on the progress of their primary teeth and adult teeth. Regular checkups also reveal areas of concern or tricky spots that require extra attention at home or at future appointments.

Keeping you in the loop

After the exam, we will share advice or give extra tips and tricks to help with brushing those hard-to-reach spots at home. We’ll let you know if there are any problem areas that we plan to keep an eye on and what to look out for between appointments. Together, we make a great team!

When should I take my child to the dentist for the first time?

Your child will start to cut their first teeth at around six months. It is recommended that children visit the dentist by the age of one or within six months of getting their first tooth. If you suspect something might be wrong or your child might be experiencing discomfort or pain, please book an appointment as soon as possible. It’s never too early for a child to have their first dental appointment.

How much does a routine dental visit for a child cost at Dayspring Dental?

As a family dentist, we ensure our fees are affordable and start at just $150 for a child’s teeth cleaning. If you have dental health coverage, our front desk staff can submit the insurance claims electronically, whenever possible. Book an appointment for your child or yourself here.

How often should my child visit the dentist?

Every six months, unless otherwise specified by a dentist. Some patients opt for every three months or eight months, depending on their personal needs and budget. You shouldn’t wait for more than a year between appointments. If your child is experiencing any discomfort or pain, don’t wait, book an appointment now.
