Regular checkups and cleanings prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Plan your cleaning and checkup every 6 to 8 months to prevent the sudden onset of dental pain and unexpected expenses.

Creating Healthy Smiles

Our professional team of dental hygienists and dentists is here to help with all your dental treatment needs, whether you are here for a routine dental cleaning or one of our deep cleaning services. Having a routine teeth cleaning and a checkup is one of the best things you can do to help your teeth and gums. Teeth cleaning removes plaque, tartar and bacteria that cause tooth decay, gum disease, and chronic bad breath. A hygienist cleans areas that aren’t easy to reach with routine brushing and flossing at home, such as below the gum line. A thorough cleaning and full mouth exam give the hygienist and dentist the perfect opportunity to monitor your oral health and spot problems that can be resolved or avoided before they become painful and expensive.

Having regular teeth cleaning can help your teeth look whiter and brighter naturally. Some of the benefits of having a regular dental exam include:

  • Eliminating plaque – a sticky substance containing bacteria that eat away your enamel.
  • Removing tartar build-up, plaque that has hardened and could lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Checking for receding gums, chipped or broken teeth, and other signs of gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Get rid of coffee, tea, or other stains on your teeth.
  • Creating an overall healthy smile!

What Happens During A Dental Cleaning?

Gum Health

Super important and often under-appreciated. Your gums support your teeth and frame your smile. We will take a close look at your tongue, gum, teeth, and all other areas of your mouth with a special focus on the gum line to ensure your entire mouth is as healthy as can be without any sign of inflammation or impending gum disease. We promise not to be too hard on you about your flossing habits.

Plaque & Tartar Removal

Plaque is a soft, sticky film that builds up on your teeth. It needs to be routinely cleaned away with thorough brushing, flossing and a professional dental cleaning before it can harden into tartar deposits. Tartar is usually darker in colour and often found in tricky to clean places like the gum line. A dental hygienist has the tools and know-how to carefully scale away stuck-on plaque and tartar from hard-to-reach places. With all that out of the way we get to polish your teeth to remove stains and leave your teeth gleaming.

Dental Exam

When your teeth cleaning is complete it is now time for a dental exam with one of our dentists. Your dentist will look at your chart and x-rays and focus on those problem areas to give you advice on how to keep your teeth and gums clean after your appointment. The dentist might recommend further dental treatment or give you tips and advice on how to slow or reverse tooth decay, inflammation, or gum disease. We would be happy to answer any questions you have or to hear about any discomfort, sensitivity, or dental pain you’ve experienced. Our team of dentists and dental hygienists is here to help you achieve your healthy smile!

Affordable family dentist office located in Oakville

Routine checkups and cleanings are such a great way to prevent costly dental problems that most insurance companies cover routine dental cleaning visits every six months. If you are without dental insurance, talk to us about options for payment and budgeting your dental care needs. Services typically cost $200 and up, depending on what is required.

When we determine the actual cost of your dental treatment we look at:
  • Your current oral health.
  • Whether or not any new x-rays are required.
  • The amount of time required by the dental team to meet your specific needs.
  • The equipment and supplies that are required to serve all your teeth cleaning and dental exam needs.

These routine appointments are very important to us, as we see them as the most effective way to prevent more invasive treatments, prevent serious dental pain and keep you as happy and healthy as possible.

Fluoride treatment

The fluoride treatment we use is stronger than store-bought because it is administered by medical professionals in our office. Our most common fluoride treatment comes in the form of foam or gel that goes in an upper and lower tray which we then place in your mouth. Fluoride only takes a few minutes to apply at the end of your teeth cleaning. We will ask you to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after this dental treatment for maximum benefits.

Oral Cancer Screening

Dental exams are important as dentist check for signs of oral cancer that may need further investigation by specialists. Early detection of oral cancer can boost survival rate to 80-90%. Our dental team looks for signs such as sores, abnormal colour on gums or other parts of the mouth, lumps, or other such possible indicators. We perform this screening as part of our dental services to every patient. If you have a concern or question, let us know right away, no matter how inconsequential it may seem.
How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

We would normally recommend coming in every 6 months to get your teeth cleaned and have a checkup. However, the dentist may recommend more frequent visits if you have a specific need or we may book appointments further out if absolutely necessary for insurance or cost reasons.

We also offer teeth whitening services!

My tooth hurts but it's not the time for my next checkup yet. What should I do?

Don’t wait! If you have any pain or discomfort in your mouth, call our dental office right away! Routine dental cleaning and exams are a great way to prevent problems but are certainly not the only time to talk about them. Even if your issue seems minor, let us know now so we can fix it. Also, we accept new patients anytime!

Orthodontics may also help you to reach those problem areas better.

I have dentures. Do I still need a regular checkup?

Yes! Checkups are for your whole mouth – gums, tongue, bones and all. If you wear dentures we would like to see you for routine dental exams to ensure your dentures are in good shape and fit correctly on your gums and to examine the rest of your mouth and oral health. We create healthy smiles for everyone!

How long does a dental cleaning take?

This depends on a variety of things, such as:

  • how long it has been since your last dental cleaning and exam;
  • how much tartar and plaque are on your teeth and gum line;
  • if you require x-rays or other screening;
  • if you have issues or concerns we need to investigate further.

On average, most teeth cleaning visits are 30 – 60 minutes. If you need to break this into smaller visits due to health or other reasons, please discuss your needs with us. We are here to help.

For our youngest visitors, we have pediatric dentistry and education.

Can I help prevent tartar?

There are some ways to help prevent tartar on a daily basis, such as:

  • Choose a tartar-control toothpaste with fluoride.
  • Brush after every meal and before bedtime.
  • Use dental floss at least once per day.
  • Rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash daily to help kill bacteria that cause plaque.

All of the above combined with routine dental exams every six months (or less) helps control plaque and tartar from building up on your teeth and along the gum line. If you would like us to show you the proper way to brush and/or floss, let us know. We can even watch you floss and give you tips or tools to make it a better experience for you!

Can I eat after dental cleaning?

With your regular teeth cleaning hygiene visit, you can go ahead and eat or drink right after. Try to avoid anything that is acidic or abrasive.

However, if you received a fluoride treatment during your cleaning, you should wait at least 30 minutes before eating anything. This allows the fluoride to seal properly.

Can I brush my teeth after dental cleaning?

Yes! The best way to help your overall mouth health is to continue brushing and flossing your teeth after every meal and before bed. This helps to maintain all the work that you received while at our dental office. Creating healthy smiles for life!
